How to Track Garden Sun in One Day—and Know When to Check Again
Late summer is when your garden tells the truth about its busiest season. Deciduous trees and shrubs are fully leafed out. Perennials are tall. Vines, trellises, and neighboring plants occupy the space they have been growing into all year. A bed that looked open and bright in early spring may now be shaded for much of the day.
That is exactly why it is worth checking the sun now—even if you will not plant until next spring. Eight months from now, it will be easy to look at a bare tree and an open bed and forget how different that same area looked in August. A dated, full-canopy record preserves what memory will not.
It also gives you a faster way to plan next year's garden. Instead of choosing a plant first and repeatedly asking whether it might fit each available spot, learn what each space can support. Then build your plant list from those conditions. You research the area once and use that information to narrow your choices, rather than starting the same search again for every plant.
The important question is not simply, “Is this spot sunny?” It is:
When does direct sun reach this spot, how long does it stay, and what takes it away?
Your garden does not have one sunlight pattern. It has a timeline—and late summer lets you record that timeline while the landscape is full.
You do not need special equipment to begin seeing that timeline. With one reasonably clear day, a phone note or index card, and a few short trips outside, you can create a useful sunlight snapshot for one bed, border, or container area.
The result will not predict the entire year. It will give you a realistic full-canopy baseline, help you map next year's planting options, and show you when another seasonal check is needed.
Why Map Sun Before You Choose Next Year's Plants?
Sun mapping works best as a site-first planning tool.
If you begin with a plant, you have to investigate each possible location: Does it receive enough direct sun? Is that sun in the morning or afternoon? Will a tree canopy reach it by midsummer? If the answer is no, you start over with another location or another plant.
When you begin with the space, those questions become a reusable record. You can label a bed as receiving direct morning sun until early afternoon, note that a maple creates dappled shade after that, and use those conditions to build a shorter, more realistic plant list.
Full-canopy observations also reveal what may change. Healthy trees and shrubs can grow taller and wider next season. Record the present canopy edge and any branch that may extend farther over the growing area. If pruning could improve light, note it as a future decision—not an immediate instruction. Confirm the appropriate method and timing for that species before making a cut. The goal of today's sun check is to document the site, not to prescribe out-of-season pruning.
What a One-Day Garden Sun Check Can Tell You
A one-day check can help you record:
- when direct sunlight reaches one selected area;
- whether some periods are dappled, filtered, or shaded;
- whether most direct exposure occurs in the morning, midday, or afternoon;
- what currently creates the shade; and
- what kinds of plants the location may be able to support next season.
It cannot prove that the same pattern continues through every season. It also cannot show exactly what happened during every minute between your observations.
Think of the result as a dated field note:
This is what the light did here, under these conditions, on this day.
That limitation does not make the check useless. It makes the record honest. A practical estimate tied to a date and full-canopy stage is more useful than a confident springtime guess based on a landscape that has not filled in yet.
Before You Start: Choose the Area and the Day
Select one planting area
Begin with one location you want to understand for next year's garden: a raised bed, an in-ground border, a patio position for containers, or one end of a larger bed. You do not need to choose the plant first.
Give it a simple name such as “fence bed” or “patio corner.” Keep the boundary consistent during every check. If you observe the sunny half of a bed at 9:00 a.m. and the shaded half at 3:00 p.m., your notes will not describe one location.
Choose a representative day
Use a clear or mostly clear day when you can distinguish shadows cast by trees and structures from shade caused by clouds. If fast-moving clouds keep changing the light, postpone the check or mark the affected observations and repeat them later.
Record:
- the date;
- general weather;
- whether nearby deciduous trees and shrubs are bare, leafing out, or in full leaf; and
- any temporary condition, such as a shade cloth, parked vehicle, or movable container, that changes the site.
The relevant season still depends on what may eventually grow there. A leaf-off observation may be useful for early spring bulbs. It is not a dependable picture of summer light beneath a deciduous canopy. For a future summer vegetable, flower, or mixed bed, a late-summer full-canopy observation is the more useful starting point because it shows the area after the landscape has filled in.
How to Track Garden Sun in One Day
You can use a phone note, index card, or plain sheet of paper. For every observation, write three things:
- the time;
- the light condition; and
- the main source of shade, if there is one.
Then follow this process.
1. Start in the early morning
Stand where you can see the entire selected area. Record the time and decide which condition best describes it:
- Direct sun: Sunlight reaches the area without being blocked by a structure or plant canopy.
- Dappled or filtered light: Patches of light pass through leaves or an open canopy.
- Shade: Direct sunlight does not reach the area at that observation. The space may still look bright because of open sky or reflected light.
Do not convert dappled light into a fixed fraction of direct sun. Keep it as a separate observation.
2. Check about every two hours
Return to the same viewing point about every two hours from early morning through late afternoon. A sample day might include checks at 7:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., and 5:00 p.m.
This interval keeps the process manageable, but it does not prove that the light stayed unchanged for the full two hours between visits. If the area is directly sunny at 1:00 p.m. and dappled at 3:00 p.m., the change happened somewhere inside that interval.
You are building an estimate, not a laboratory measurement.
3. Add a transition check when it matters
If you see a shadow edge approaching the bed, check again sooner. The same applies if your final estimate may be close to the requirement for the plant you want to grow.
An extra observation when direct sun begins or ends is often more valuable than several routine checks made while the condition is unchanged.
For example:
- At 1:00 p.m., the whole area is in direct sun.
- At 2:00 p.m., the tree-canopy edge reaches the far side.
- At 2:15 p.m., most of the selected area is dappled.
That gives you a more defensible transition time than simply assuming the change occurred at 3:00 p.m.
4. Record when the direct light occurs
Two locations can receive a similar number of direct-sun hours and still experience different conditions.
Morning sun is generally gentler. Afternoon exposure is often stronger and warmer, especially in summer. That does not make morning sun universally better or afternoon sun universally harmful. It means the time band belongs in your record.
Instead of writing only “about six hours,” write “about six hours, mostly morning” or “about six hours from late morning through afternoon.”
That detail helps you narrow the plant list first, then compare the strongest candidates with guidance for each exact plant.
5. Name what creates the shade
Write the source beside each shaded or dappled observation:
- house;
- fence;
- shed;
- deciduous tree;
- evergreen canopy;
- neighboring structure;
- trellis;
- tall crop; or
- another visible obstruction.
The source helps you predict whether the pattern is likely to change. A house will remain in place, although its shadow changes with the sun's seasonal path. A deciduous canopy fills in, drops its leaves, and may extend farther as the tree grows. A corn row or bean trellis may create shade only during part of the growing season.
If a branch is the main reason a bed loses light, add that fact to the record. It may become a pruning question later, but do not treat pruning as an automatic fix. The right cut and timing depend on the plant, its health, and the goal of the pruning.
Turn Your Notes Into One Useful Sun Record
Review the observations in time order. Identify the period when the selected area clearly received direct sun, then use any transition checks to improve the estimate.
Suppose your first notes look like this:
- 7:00 a.m. — shaded by the house;
- 9:00 a.m. — direct sun;
- 11:00 a.m. — direct sun;
- 1:00 p.m. — direct sun;
- 3:00 p.m. — dappled at the edge of a tree canopy; and
- 5:00 p.m. — shaded.
Those observations show the pattern, but not the exact beginning and end of the direct-sun period. If two extra checks show direct sun reaching the area near 8:15 a.m. and becoming dappled near 2:10 p.m., you can reasonably record about six hours of direct sun.
Your summary might read:
On August 12, with the nearby maple in full leaf, the fence bed received about six hours of direct sun from midmorning to early afternoon. Dappled light followed, with shade mainly created by the tree canopy.
Notice what the sentence preserves: date, canopy stage, estimated duration, time-of-day, and shade source.
If you do not catch the transitions, use a range or state that the duration is uncertain. Do not invent precision from a few observations.
When Should You Check the Garden Sun Again?
You do not need to map the area continuously. Repeat the check when a meaningful change could affect the planting decision.
1. After nearby deciduous plants leaf out
An open early-spring area may receive far less direct light after a tree or shrub develops its summer canopy. If you plan to grow a summer crop there, check the full-canopy pattern.
2. When planning for a different season
The sun's position changes through the year, so buildings, fences, hills, and vegetation can cast different shadows in different seasons. Repeat the check when the next crop's relevant growing season differs meaningfully from the date of your original observation.
3. When the shade source changes
Check again after adding a shed, fence, pergola, trellis, or shade cloth. Fast-growing corn, sunflowers, pole beans, and other tall crops can also alter the pattern inside a garden.
Major canopy growth or pruning may justify another observation as well.
4. When the decision is close
If your estimate sits near the plant's stated light requirement, one more observation is better than rounding the result upward. Check the transitions more closely or repeat the process on another representative day.
Use the Result to Build a Plant List for the Space
Once the site record is complete, use it to define the planting conditions before you shop or finalize next year's plan. Summarize the location in plain language: estimated direct-sun hours, time-of-day, full-canopy shade source, and any likely change such as tree growth, a future trellis, or properly timed pruning under consideration.
Now look for plants whose needs align with that record. Check reliable guidance for each exact crop, species, or cultivar, but begin with a smaller group already suited to what the space can handle. This is faster than choosing a plant first, testing it against the location, rejecting it, and repeating the entire search.
You will often see “full sun,” “part sun,” and “part shade” on plant labels. Those terms are useful shorthand, but sources do not define every label in exactly the same way. Many Extension references describe full sun as at least six hours of direct light, while specific fruiting vegetables are commonly recommended six to eight hours for best growth.
Keep your actual hours and time-of-day with the label. Then ask:
- Which plants appear to match this location's light conditions?
- Is the observation from the plant's relevant growing season?
- Is the plant suited to morning, afternoon, or either exposure in your climate?
- Is the estimate far enough from a stated minimum to make that plant a sensible candidate?
Sunlight is not the final test. Also consider soil, drainage, water access, heat, mature size, root competition, and whether you can reach the plant for routine care.
A sunny-looking opening beneath a tree, for example, may still be a difficult vegetable location because tree and shrub roots compete for water, nutrients, and space.
If a match remains uncertain, use a movable container, try a small planting, or repeat the observation rather than forcing a favorite plant into a site that may not support it.
Your One-Day Garden Sun Check
For one selected area:
- Choose a reasonably clear, representative day.
- Record the date, weather, and canopy stage.
- Check the same boundary about every two hours.
- Separate direct sun, dappled light, and shade.
- Record the time and shade source.
- Add a transition check when the shadow edge matters.
- Summarize the result as an estimate for that date.
- Use the site record to narrow next year's plant choices.
- Repeat the check after a meaningful seasonal, canopy, or site change.
One day will not describe the entire property or predict the whole year. It will preserve the full-canopy reality you are likely to forget by spring, replace a vague impression with a useful observation, and make next year's plant research much more focused.
